Belize is rich in natural beauty. The landscape is a mix of mountains, savannahs and coastal lagoons. The inner coastal waters are shallow and protected by a line of coral reefs. Scattered along the reefs are islets called cayes ("keys"), which extend the length of the country. With the largest living barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, Belize is a popular destination site for divers.

The country is thought to have been the heart of the Mayan culture. The highest concentration of Mayan sites in Central America is found in Belize. Caracol, currently under excavation, is the largest of the ruins. The tallest pyramid in Caracol rises 140 feet high.

Belize was known as British Honduras until 1973. It is located on the Caribbean coast of Central America. Mexico borders it on the north, Guatemala on the west. English is the official language of Belize with Spanish, Garifuna, English Creole, Mayan, Chinese and German also spoken.

With all it has to offer, Belize is rapidly becoming recognized as an enchanting country in which to retire, vacation-- or study!
